I’m a composer. Have been for over 25 years now, which still seems faintly unbelievable.

Over that time I’ve had the privilege of scoring a fair few things you might have stumbled across, including Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Thor: Tales of Asgard, Jungle Book for TF1 and ZDF, Lassie for Dreamworks, Badjelly for ITV, dozens of movies and hundreds of episodes of TV including many award winning, ground breaking natural history films.

Before music became a full-time career, I worked as a BBC journalist and news presenter. It sounds like an unusual route into composing, but it taught me something invaluable: how producers and directors think. Spend enough time in television and you begin to understand what people need from music, even when they don’t quite have the words for it. That perspective has shaped the way I approach every project.

“Like most composers, I’m still trying to write the piece that’s better than the last one”

My own musical education was less conventional. I learned largely by ear, took music theory seriously in my twenties, and have been learning ever since. Like most composers, I’m still trying to write the piece that’s better than the last one.

Some years are quieter than others. Some involve scoring a hundred episodes of television and a feature film at the same time. I work with live musicians whenever I can and remain convinced that real performers are what give a score its character. Anyone can buy the same sample library. Nobody else has your musicians.

Whether I’m working with a full orchestra, a chamber ensemble, solo performers or electronics, the goal is always the same: understand the project, understand the story, and write music that helps bring it to life.

These days you’ll usually find me in my studio surrounded by far too many cables, happily wrestling with deadlines, chasing ideas, and looking forward to whatever comes next.
